When I visit with people who haven’t planned a Disney World vacation, I often hear the same sentiment – “the planning seems so overwhelming!”. I’m here to tell you, that part is honestly half the fun. The Disney magic starts way before you ever leave the house. It kicks in the moment you tell the kids, and suddenly random moments of Disney magic start showing up. You find your family slipping into almost daily conversations about rides, snacks, and what characters you want to meet. You start counting down without even meaning to, and somehow the days feel longer and faster all at once. Before you know it, you’ll find Disney songs popping into your head throughout the day.
Then there’s the planning itself—and don’t worry, I’m here to help you through all of that too! You start scrolling resorts after bedtime, debating park days like it’s a sport, and overthinking dining choices. It starts to feel like you’re already there a little bit, picturing everyone’s faces and imagining how it’ll all play out. The anticipation just kind of sneaks into everyday life. Even the stressy parts feel lighter because you know what’s waiting on the other side.
By the time you actually go, you’ve already shared all this excitement together. The trip has started in tiny ways—through conversations, plans, and that constant “I can’t believe we’re really doing this” feeling. That’s the magic no one talks about, but every Disney mom totally gets. And let’s be real, no matter how you do Disney World, it is an investment. Why wouldn’t you want to get the most bang for your buck by extending that magic as long as you can? That’s what we do in our family! Here are some of our favorites that you can try with your family.
Resort Tours
Watching Disney World resort tours on YouTube is a surprisingly magical way to help your family find the resort that fits you best. It lets everyone step into the vibe of each hotel—laid-back, luxurious, playful, or over-the-top themed—before you ever book, so no one feels like they’re guessing. Kids can spot pools and themes they’ll love, adults can check out room layouts and transportation options, and suddenly the decision becomes a fun family conversation instead of a stressful comparison chart.
Best of all, these tours don’t steal the magic—they build it. When you finally arrive, the resort already feels familiar and exciting, like a place you’ve been dreaming about together, not just a place you picked. My husband and I like to talk about the aspects of resort [number of beds, transportation, etc.] that we feel are essential to us having a great trip. Then we offer up 2-4 options we view as a family for honest opinions and discussions. This leaves everyone feeling like they had a say in where we stayed, and we can start picturing what our magic will look like there.

Virtual Ride Throughs
Watching Disney World ride videos together before your trip isn’t “spoiling the magic”—it’s warming it up. It turns the planning phase into its own mini-vacation night—snacks on the couch, excitement building, and everyone chiming in with “That one looks amazing!” or “Nope, I’m skipping that.” Beyond the fun, it’s genuinely valuable: kids know what to expect, parents can spot rides that might be too intense, and everyone feels more confident day of. Instead of anxiety or indecision in the parks, you arrive with shared favorites, inside jokes, and a sense that the magic started long before you walked through the gates.
Think of it less as a spoiler and more as a trailer. The smells, sounds, surprises, and sheer scale can’t be captured on a screen—if anything, the previews make that first real ride even sweeter. Think of it less as a spoiler and more as a trailer. Having a list of everyone’s favorites and must do’s beforehand also helps you form your strategy around Lightning Lane purchases and get the most magic out of your days.
Food and Festival Videos
EPCOT hosts four signature festivals throughout the year, each with its own vibe and flavor:
- EPCOT International Flower & Garden Festival – A springtime favorite filled with stunning character topiaries, colorful gardens, outdoor kitchens, and a fresh, sunny atmosphere.
- EPCOT International Food & Wine Festival – A fan-favorite celebration of global cuisine, drinks, and live entertainment, where guests can “eat around the world” one bite at a time.
- EPCOT International Festival of the Arts – A creative blend of visual art, music, and culinary artistry, featuring interactive exhibits and food that looks almost too pretty to eat.
- EPCOT International Festival of the Holidays – A cozy, heartwarming festival showcasing holiday traditions, storytellers, and seasonal treats from cultures around the globe.

More often than not, your trip will take place during one of these four festivals. Watching videos about EPCOT’s festivals before your trip is a fun, low-pressure way for the whole family to explore colorful booths, live entertainment, and over-the-top snacks together, sparking plenty of “We have to try that” moments. Far from ruining the surprise, these videos help everyone appreciate the festivals even more once you’re there—you recognize details, understand what’s special about each event, and feel excited instead of overwhelmed.
When you finally step into EPCOT and the music, aromas, and atmosphere surround you, the magic feels richer, not reduced, because you already know you’re in the middle of something worth savoring. Again, understanding the extra special things happening around EPCOT while you are there helps you better plan your park day including Lightning Lanes and, my personal favorite, what you want to eat!
Disney Family Movie Nights
Every Friday night, our house transforms. We’ve started a Disney Movie Night tradition in the months leading up to our Disney World trip this summer. Each week, we choose a Disney animated movie and build a simple evening around it—food, a few decorations, maybe a themed drink or dessert. Nothing fancy. Just intentional. And honestly? It’s become one of our favorite parts of the trip!
It Turns Planning Into an Experience
Planning a Disney vacation can quickly turn into logistics—park reservations, dining plans, Lightning Lanes, hotel details. Necessary? Yes. Magical? I love it! – but probably not adding as much magic for my kiddos.
Disney Movie Night shifts the focus back to the heart of it all: the stories. Instead of just saying, “We’re riding Seven Dwarfs Mine Train,” we watch Snow White together. Instead of adding Slinky Dog Dash to our list, we spend a Friday laughing through Toy Story with “Slinky Dogs” for dinner. The rides become more meaningful. The characters feel familiar. The parks start to feel personal.

It Builds Anticipation in a Way Kids Understand
For kids, “this summer” can feel like forever away. But “Friday is Moana night”? That’s real. These weekly traditions break the countdown into bite-sized moments. Each movie becomes a stepping stone toward the trip. The excitement builds naturally instead of being one big, distant event. By the time we actually meet Aladdin or spot Buzz Lightyear in the parks, it won’t feel random—it will feel like seeing an old friend.
It Creates Immersive Magic at Home
We keep it simple and creative. Familiar foods my picky family will actually eat, just with a sprinkle of pixie dust.
- Taco Night for Coco.
- Peperoni pizza “roses” for Beauty and the Beast.
- Chick Hicks chicken strips for Cars.
The food isn’t elaborate. The decorations aren’t expensive. Shop your house! Use your kids toys as props. A home printer and some cardstock can help you add character touches to your dinner.

More than the details, the intention transforms our living room. For two hours, we’re not just watching a movie. We’re immersed in it. And that immersion makes Disney feel closer, more tangible. It keeps the magic alive in the everyday routine of school, work, and activities.
It Helps Kids Connect to the Parks Ahead of Time
Disney World can be overwhelming. Big crowds. Big spaces. Big emotions. But when kids already know the stories, songs, and characters, the parks feel less intimidating and more exciting. They understand why a castle matters. They recognize the music drifting through a pavilion. They connect the dots between screen and real life. That familiarity builds confidence—and joy.
It Creates Memories Before the Vacation Even Starts
Here’s the unexpected gift: the movie nights themselves have become memories. The giggles during funny scenes. The Easter eggs of other movies woven in. The “themed” dinner that didn’t quite turn out but made everyone laugh anyway.
When we look back on this Disney trip, we won’t just remember the parks. We’ll remember the months leading up to it—the Fridays, the popcorn bowls, the excitement building week after week.
The magic didn’t start at the airport. It started at home.
It Reminds Us What Disney Is Really About
At its core, Disney isn’t just about rides or fireworks. It’s about storytelling, often weaving in themes of adventure, family and culture. By watching these movies together, we’re slowing down enough to reconnect with those themes. We’re not rushing past them in a busy park day—we’re sitting on the couch, snuggled under blankets, letting them sink in.
And that makes the eventual trip feel deeper, more meaningful, and definitely more magical.
