There’s something extra special about the very first night of a new family tradition. Our very first Disney Movie Night officially kicked off with one of our all-time favorite classics: Toy Story. And honestly? We couldn’t have picked a more perfect movie to start this journey toward our Disney World trip.
Setting the Scene
Before the movie even started, the house already felt different. My 12 year old, who often feels closer to adulthood than kid, was buzzing around with excitement. For decorations all I needed were toys pulled from my kids’ rooms and a few items printed on cardstock on our home computer. I’ll even take care of that for you! It wasn’t fancy, but it didn’t need to be. The anticipation alone made it magical. There’s something about pressing play on a childhood favorite that instantly transports you — and as soon as that familiar theme song started, we were all in.
The Food Lineup: Andy’s Room Approved
We kept the menu simple, fun, and completely themed to the movie. At the end of the day, the menu has to be something my picky eaters will actually eat.

Slinky Dogs
Our “Slinky Dogs” were classic hot dogs with playful Slinky heads and tails added at the ends. Just cardboard, hot glue and some toothpicks. Nothing complicated — just enough creativity to make the kids grin before taking a bite. It’s amazing how a small detail can make dinner feel like part of the show. You can grab these Slinky additions in the Canva link above.
Rex’s Herbivore Snacks
Because every group needs a dinosaur-approved option, we served up “Rex’s Herbivore Snacks” — a colorful platter of veggies and dip. Naming it made all the difference.
Mr. Potato Head’s Fruit Pieces (My Personal Favorite)
This one stole the show. I carved a cantaloupe into a serving bowl and turned it into a makeshift Mr. Potato Head using detachable face pieces. It held fresh fruit, but it also held the title for “coolest” for the evening. Not going to lie, I loved it! Sometimes it’s the silliest effort that brings the biggest joy.
The Concession Stand Was Open
Of course, no movie night is complete without theater-style treats. Our little concession stand featured:
- Popcorn
- Assorted candy
- Shaved ice
The kids loved “ordering” their snacks, and it made the night feel like more than just sitting down to watch a movie. It felt like an event.

Reliving a Classic
Rewatching Toy Story as a family was such a reminder of why it’s stood the test of time. The one-liners we had forgotten. The subtle jokes that hit differently as adults. The heart behind Woody and Buzz’s rivalry-turned-friendship.
We found ourselves laughing at moments we hadn’t thought about in years. And watching it through our kids’ eyes made it feel brand new again.
The Magic Is Already Starting
If this first Disney Movie Night taught us anything, it’s this: the magic doesn’t wait for the parks.
It starts at home.
In the kitchen.
On the couch.
In the laughter over a perfectly timed one-liner.
As we count down to Disney World this summer, these Fridays are already becoming part of the story. And if Toy Story was any indication, we’re in for a pretty unforgettable ride.
